Teiki Hacheche (TAH), twelfth at the Optimist World Championship in July, had two further wins in the final races of the championship to secure overall victory.
He finally won the event over Corentin Guegan and Gael Blanquart of New Caledonia. The victory confirms him as a new member of a select group of Tahitian sailors who may go on to higher things. A previous winner Billy Besson went on to win the inaugural multihull event at the ISAF World Youth Sailing Championship.
The Cook Islands will be pleased with their results, getting a sailor in the top ten for the first time through Jan Sijp and taking the girls bronze. Papua New Guinea, present for the first time with a very young team, were far from disgraced.
The event continues for a further day with some light-hearted team racing, but the event can already be seen as a huge success due to a lot of hard and imaginative effort by the Samoan hosts.
