Day One of racing opened with a first race with light wind of 5 knots to gusts of 7 knots and sunshine. Setting early pace was Eduardo Cordero (VEN) with fellow countryman Eduard Gonzalez in second, John Kolius (USA) was first of the home sailors in third place overall.
The fleet was returned to the harbour after race one, having to shelter from a violent thunderstorm that shattered the previous sunshine of the day. When racing eventually got underway again at 1510 hrs in only 5 knots of wind it was Kolius who lead, and won the race, followed by Bishop Stieffel (USA) and Jean Bergman (USA) in third.
Results are very inconsistent throughout the fleet on day one due to the fickle breezes encountered. However, there is a long way to go in this regatta and everything to play for. John Kolius leads overall with a remarkably consistent first and third places.
