The 2002 Master’s Cup in Starnberg Lake near Munich was a successful event with 40 boats from 9 countries. The competition level was high, with this year including for the first time 10 “Apprentice Masters” who took three of the top four positions, among them the first place, with Stefan Schneider and Frank Thieme (GER) winning with six race victories out of seven.

The Master’s title was won by Thomas Schiffer and Thomas Kindermann(GER). The Grandmasters title (combined total age over 100 years) was won by Martin Steiger and Hans Vonmoos (SUI). The oldest masters, Stan and Dawn Speer (GBR) whose combined ages totalled more than 130 years, finished in twenty-eighth place, which shows that the 470 is keeping its sailors young!

The conditions were leniant for masters: wind a force 2-3 and mild temperatures in spite of the rain. Even more comfortable was the Bayerischer Yacht Club, which provided an excellent regatta committee and was a fantastic host. The social events were impressive, especially with a visit to the royal brewery and supper, where the “Berliner” crews exhibited real German Stimmung.

All thanks must go to the BYC and the numerous sponsors, among them the Prince of Bavaria. Next years event will be held at Lake Ballton in Hungary.
