The North Sea Team are currently leading The Sardinia Cup, after the first day of racing yesterday
This event is particularly different from the previous years, in that two boats make up a team for each country; one, a Farr 40 One Design and the other an IMS boat. North Sea, consisting of Michael Illbrucks Farr 40 Nela, and the Dutch boat Mean Machine belonging to Peter de Ridder, won the first race of five, and are now leading overall after two races.
In second place overall after today’s racing are Italy Yellow, made up of the two Giacomelli Sport boat belonging to Alberto Signorini and Stefano Spangaro, while in third place are the Spanish team, with Bribon and Telefonica Movistar, still awaiting the arrival of His Highness the King of Spain today.
Yesterdays racing consisted of two, 8 mile windward/leeward courses in a 15 to 17 knot south easterly wind which tested. Both the Farr 40 and IMS classes started on the same line.
The first race was dominated by the IMS boat Giacomelli Sport belonging to Stefano Spangaro, a Grand Soleil 44, which won both the first race and the second, as did the German boat Nela in the Farr 40 class.
Racing continues today with a further two windward/leeward courses.
