Joaquin Blanco (ESP) and Alessandra Ferlich (ITA) Win
The final day of the championship saw a very close and exciting finish to the boys event.
The final day of the championship saw a very close and exciting finish to the boys event.
The wind filled in to allow racing to start at 1300. No race could be started after 1600 and the sailing instructions provided for an additional discard if two races were sailed but not if there was only one.
Reigning champion Joaquin Blanco (ESP) had suffered a DSQ in Friday’s race 7 and had slipped to 4th position over-all. He rose to the occasion, registered a win in the first race of the day and, once the decision was taken not to hold a second race, had again secured gold. The overnight leader Dario Motta (ITA) took silver, a mere two points behind Joaquin. A discard performance from Francisco Renna (ARG) and an OCS by the apparent winner of race 9B Mihovil Fantela (CRO) enabled Pablo Santurde (ESP) to take bronze.
In the girls event two races were held with the Race Officer squeezing in a start for them just before the cut-off time. Alessandra Ferlich (ITA) had already secured gold and Tina Mihelic (CRO) was practically certain of silver. A struggle developed for bronze but a 2nd. in the final race gave it to Enia Nincevic on a tie-break with Rebecka Harding (SWE).
Alessandra continues a fine Italian tradition in the event and was a clear and deserved winner. It is also great to see that the phenomenal success in recent years of the Croatian boys (as well as 1, 2 in the Optimist Worlds they have recently won the Laser 4.7, Radial Youth and Radial Open Worlds) now seems to be extending to their girls as well.
