Medals Already Confirmed - Report From Day 8

Whilst in some events, there is no question of the medallists, in others the results still remain open. Tomorrow’s final day will determine the 2002 World Champions.

With only one day to go before the conclusion of the 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games, the sailors have had a hard day with today’s wind conditions. A light and particularly irregular breeze was blowing in Marseille, which kept the boards ashore, but all other events were out racing.

Medals are already confirmed in the single-handed women’s event in the Laser Radial and multihull women on the Hobie 16, together with both the men’s and women’s boardsailing events on the Bic Techno. However, in many other events it is still all open.

Please note that all results in the following report are provisional, and subject to protests. Final results will be posted on the event website.

Single-handed Dinghy Men – Laser
Today saw a further two races held for the men’s single-handed dinghy fleet, and just one discard in play, there are some sailors keen to complete 11 races, to get rid of their second worst score. So far after 9 races, eight different sailors have taken bullets, demonstrating the high level at this event. Whilst no one sailor has dominated, the success has been in consistency. Overall leader Robert Scheidt (BRA) placed his worst result so far in the series today, with a 10th in race 8, but discarding this he sits fairly safe at the top with the rest of his results, except one, in the top 5. Could this be third time lucky for Robert. Despite winning Olympic Medals and World Championship titles in the Laser Class, he has failed to win the ISAF worlds, placeing 2nd in 1994 and 6th in 1998. We will see the outcome when tomorrow concludes.

A good result for the Evagelos Chimonas (GRE) who posting a 3rd and 1st today, has leapt from 6th to 2nd overall, and with a comfortable 8 point margin over the chasing Daniel Birgmark (SWE) in third, he will be reluctant to let go of this silver medal position.

A superb result for Diego Romero (ARG) who took his first bullet of the series today, in race 8, which helped to move him up from 32nd to 20th overall after today’s race. Diego is one of the 38 sailors at the ISAF World Sailing Games who has benefited from the ISAF “Athlete Participation Programme”, which has provided financial support and coaching expertise to sailors.

Similarly, Maxim Semerkhanov (RUS) surprised the fleet by taking a bullet in race 8, compared to his previous placings.

Into the top 10 comes Spanish sailor Luis Doreste, and out goes Karl Suneson (SWE).

So, the predictions for tomorrow? Robert Scheidt looks sure of a medal, but behind him it is fairly open?

Single-handed Dinghy Women – Laser Radial
“Shifting” was the unanimous comment given to today’s wind.

When coming back to the shore, all the sailors talked about their difficult experiences, although for some the shifty conditions proved to their advantage. During today’s first race, leader Sophie de Turkheim (FRA) didn’t have a good result, but this gave her no cause for concern as sits a long way ahead of the rest of the fleet and her immediate rivals Polish girl Katarzyna Szotynska and Croatian Gea Barbic. For Sophie, Gold medal victory is already guaranteed and she can race tomorrow as a spectator, but most probably will go for bullets!

After today’s 3 races, there is no change in the top 5 positions, and realistically, behind Sophie, the current second and third placed sailors look unlikely to relinquish their places – but anything can still happen.

Otherwise, today’s races saw no change in the sailors in the top 10, just a slight position move.

Katarzyna Szotynska (POL), who currently lies second overall and finished 7th at the 1998 ISAF Worlds in Dubai, said:
“I know the Laser Radial class pretty well, but likely most of the sailors here I usually sail the Europe Class used at the Olympics. One week before sailing a Laser Radial event, I always take one week intensive training. However, for this year’s preparation I was injured and could not train properly. However, today I did sufficiently well to make sure I will finish second overall.”

Double-handed Dinghy Women – 470
A further two races today for the women, with the reigning world champions Sofia Bekatorou/Emilia Tsoulfa (GRE) taking a long awaited second bullet in today’s 9th race. After their disappointing results yesterday having ripped their spinnaker, they will have been pleased to remind the fleet of the usual form.

No change back at the top with 2002 Olympic Gold Medallist Jenny Armstrong/Belinda Stowell looking safe for a medal.

Multihull Open – Hobie 16
Having taken the lead yesterday, Sydney Olympic Silver medallist Darren Bundock with crew Mark Padgett reconfirmed his position with a 3rd, 2nd and 1st, to extend his lead to a 17 point margin over fellow-country man and reigning Hobie 16 world champion, Gavin Colby/Simone Matfield. Today saw Colby take his first bullet, in Race 9, but it is Colby’s consistency which has kept him at the top in this event, not his bullets, and which now moves him back up into silver medal position, from yesterday’s 4th place.

Defending ISAF World Champions, Shaun Ferry/Alison Ball’s results managed to move them up one place to 6th overall, and with only a 9 point margin between 6th and 3rd, which is currently held by Christophe Renaud/Al Rossollin (FRA), there is much to play for tomorrow.

Otherwise no change with the same sailors in the top 10 after today’ s racing.

Multihull Women – Hobie 16
Where have they been? Italian crew Cecilia Angioni and Gessa Valentin were today’s surprise performers, winning today’s two races, but unfortunately this was not sufficient to have that much of an impact on their overall ranking, just moving them up one place. Cecilia and Gessa dominated by choosing the right side of the race course, whereas the leading French leading did not spot the advantage and stayed on the left.

Despite their 2nd and 10th places today, the French crew remain confident of a silver or even gold medal.

A good result from the Namibian team of Jana Buhrmann/Philippa McLaren who posted their highest finish today, with a 3rd in Race 12.

After their victories today, Cecilia Angioni and Gessa Valentin, commented:
“It was easy for us today as most of the crews made the wrong choice and we took the risk of going to the right, which worked. It is a pity that the ISAF World Sailing Games are almost over, as we had some trouble getting used to the boat rotation and the particularly shifty winds disturbed us quite a lot”.

After today’s racing, out of the top 10 go Elvira Llavbres/Villosl Pinilla (ESP) and in come the Puerto Rican duo of Rosarito Martinez/Nat Oliveiro.

Keelboat Men – J/80
A very shifty wind prevailed on both the J22 and the J80 courses, which made the races particularly hard to negotiate. Three races were run in both events, and at the end of the day the sailors returned tired and with many scoring queries.

Tonight’s first protest came from the two French crews, one skipped by François Brénac and the other one by Paul Ambroise Sevestre, who came back just after the 3rd race on a motor boat to try and resolve the problem as soon as possible.

From being close at the top, the British now drop back to third, having posted a BFD and 11th today. Whilst the French and Italian teams look safe for medal positions, tomorrow’s racing looks as though it will see the two 3rd and 4th placed British teams fighting for the third medal.

A hot move up into the top 10 from the Australian crew, who jump up to 5th overall from 11th, and for the Slovenian team who go from 14th to 8th as a result of taking their first bullet of the series today in Race 9 and as a result out of the top 10 go the Swiss and Swedes.

Keelboat Women – J/22
With three races today, which saw Christine Briand’s crew post their worst results, the team had a similar query to their fellow male team mates on their results.

Christine Briand, speaking prior to the provisional overall results being published, explained: “It was very tricky today. On the first race we were a long way ahead, but suddenly we found ourselves in a wind hole and we finished 5th. During the 2nd race, CordeliaEllis (helmswoman in the British J22) could not give way to us, so that our boat was seriously damaged and our crew had to retire from the race. However, the jury did allow us to take the next start on Race 12, where we finished 4th.”

The same three teams remain in the top three, as has been the position since race 5. However, with 3rd and 4th placed teams on equal points, the fight may be between the Australians and Italians for the bronze.

King’s Trophy For Top Overall Nation
No change at the top, with France still holding the points margin.

Weather For Final Day
So what will dawn tomorrow? Whilst some ‘in the know’ are predicting no wind, the man with the forecast says that tomorrow will dawn cloudy in the morning, which will clear to full sunshine by the afternoon. Wind will be light to start, increasing to 8-12 knots from the northwest by midday, and then backing to the west and increasing to 10-14 knots later. Sounds good – let’s see.

The Medal Ceremony will commence tomorrow evening at 19.00 hours.
