The European Championship in the popular J/22 one-design class, held from the 12th until the 16th of June 2002, was won by Team ‘Just4Fun’ with helmsman Albert Kooijman from Noordwijk (NED).
The Europeans was sailed on the waterfront of Stavoren, a small town on the north-east of the IJsselmeer in The Netherlands. The race management was in the hands of the Royal Yacht club of Sneek.
In total 15 races were sailed divided over 4 race days. There were 55 teams from six European countries: Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. Kooijman and Team ‘Just4Fun’ sailed a very impressive series, and scored only 41 points after 15 races, including two discards.
On Sunday the last three races were planned. Kooijman and Team ‘Just4Fun’ needed at least two top 3 finishes to be sure of the Europeans title. They scored two firsts and didn’t have to start the last race.
The team members of Team ‘Just4Fun’: Albert Kooijman (Noordwijk), Dolf Peet (De Kaag) and Robbert Baggers (Vinkeveen), were also the winners of the J/22 European title in 1997 and finished in second position at the J/22 Worlds in 2000. Dolf Peet is a sail maker and dealer for Hoj Jensen Sails from Denmark, which the winning team raced with at the event.
