At their meeting held last weekend in Balaton, Hungary, the IDNIYRA European National Secretaries received the formal endorsement of the International Optimist Class Association that the junior ice yacht can be known as the ‘Ice Optimist’.
Ice yachts using the Optimist rig have been around for a while, but it is only now that the direct relationship between IDNIYRA (International DN Ice Yachting Racing Association) and the International Optimist Class Association (IODA) has been formalised.
The Optimist Class was delighted to see their popular youth boat, or at least the rig, being used on frozen water and to formally support it by allowing the ‘Optimist’ name to be used.
The Optimist rig is used by junior sailors up to the age of 15, and from now onwards this class will formally be known as the “Ice Optimist”.
