Long Distance on Day Two

More fun for the competitors at the Hobie Tiger World Championships.

Day two of the 2nd Hobie Tiger World Championship at Lago di Garda in Northern Italy the sailors were afforded the opportunity to sail a long distance race. Starting shortly after noon, the sailors experienced winds of 18 gusting to 35 knots over a North / South course of 35 to 40 kilometers

Upon finishing and returning to the beach, following were some of comments from the smiling sailors –

“Good FUN, FUN, FUN….”

What a “buzz”…..

“Good times…..”

“Flying the kite downwind for 18 miles with the winds often gusting was a real treat……”

“A really great idea ……..”

“A welcome change of pace from the normal “around the buoys” racing…..”

“After a capsize I finished in the top 1/2”

“In the BIG gusts I thought about going to shore, but hung in there to the finish”

“Had to cover to hold my position for a L-O-N-G time……”

The Hobie Class should consider incorporating distance races in future World Championships. Skippers and crews alike were smiling and talking with great enthusiasm about the experience and virtually all were keen on the whole idea.
