Candidates Goals

Who Am I?

I have deep experience with World Sailing. I have been the International 49er Class President for the last 8 years (and CEO for 6 years before that) and the International Nacra 17 Class President for the last 4 years.

I am the Treasurer of the Olympic Steering Group of the Irish Sailing Association and I have represented Group A on World Sailing's Council for the last 4 years.

I have attended every single meeting of World Sailing, without exception, since 2006. I have sat on "both sides of the table":

  • on Council making decisions, and
  • as a user of World Sailing's services as the President of 2 of the Olympic Classes.

I have experienced the good and the bad and have experienced the dysfunction and inefficiency of our organization in delivering value to our members.

Professionally I am an entrepreneur and have co-founded or been involved in leadership positions in more than 6 businesses. I am an experienced Board member with several professional Non-Executive Board roles.

I am a Chartered Accountant, having trained with Deloitte and I am a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland.

My Core Values:

Honesty, integrity and sincerity. I have opinions and I am not shy about articulating them but critically, people know where they stand with me as my public comments and statements at the Council table can attest. Importantly, I understand how to work, and compromise, with other points of view.

Creativity and determination. I focus on solving problems and challenges. This stems from my corporate life where it is a never-ending series of problems that need to be overcome. It is always about looking forward and not backwards, while acknowledging the lessons we can learn from the past.

Practical and efficient. I am results focused, good at building consensus and getting things done. Plans and strategies are a first step, but execution is what counts.

Why Elect Me?

My record at Council and the success of the Classes that I have been involved with highlight my strengths and support the statements made below. I understand that it is difficult to convey the true strengths of any individual in words alone and so I am happy and available to speak to anyone at any time to discuss any point relating to our Federation.

I believe in a modern, effective and transparent structure for our organization that clarifies the roles and responsibilities of all parties and rightfully places ultimate control with our Member National Authorities.

I believe we have to do a better job at engaging with all of our members, particularly those who, for the longest time, have not been engaged. We need to leverage the technology many of us are used to in our professional lives.

I believe in a strong financial foundation and prudent management. I believe our finances should be presented in an understandable and consistent format. I believe we must add other creative funding solutions. Critically, we must focus on being a service organization, delivering programs and services to our members. That is how we will drive the growth of our sport worldwide.

I believe in getting things done and executing on an agreed plan while discarding the political quagmire that has plagued our organization.

I believe in promoting youth in our organization. We badly need an injection of dynamism. It is the ONLY way we will survive. The youth of today (who are solely our organization's future) deserve better.

I believe in passionate debate and compromise where issues can be discussed openly and in a non-hostile environment. We ALL need to be better informed. We ALL need to understand that what works for some does not always work for others. We are, after all, a diverse and multifaceted organization. That is, in fact, our strength. We need to leverage that.

I believe we have to do better at promoting participation and development. Our sport is vast and multidisciplinary. There are millions of people around the globe who "sail". We have to get creative in leveraging that.

I believe in gender equality and equity. Equality can be considered the starting line, Gender equity the finish line. We have made a good start. We need to do far more.

I hope I can count on your support.
