The leading lights in the 49erFX, Brazil's Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze have become accustomed to podium finishes and sailing silverware. The childhood friends know how to win with ease and how to fight back. At ISAF Sailing World Cup Mallorca and Hyères they held leading positions throughout the competition to take gold. They were up against it at the Santander 2014 ISAF Worlds, trailing the leaders all week until the penultimate upwind leg of the Medal Race. They turned the tide and overtook their rivals in a nail biting finish to claim their first senior world title.

What inspired you to take up sailing?

KK - I grew up on my parents sailboat and 've passed my childhood with greats sailing adventures.

What was the first boat you ever sailed and how old were you?

KK - Optimist, 9 years

KK - Yacht Club Santo Amaro

What was the first event you competed in and in what year?

KK - Youth Wolrds 2007 in Canada

What are you personal sailing career highlights?

KK - Youth Worlds 2009, Buzios. World Champion 2014

What are your future sailing goals?

KK - Olympic medals and World Champion.

Who has had the greatest impact on your sailing and career and why?

KK - Starting with my parents and family who always gave me all the necessary support and still do. All the people and friends who helped me on someway to get there and achieve my goals. My coach Javi Torres , and of course my skipper, Martine Grael, who besides great friends always encouraged me, and who is so devoted to everything she does.

KK - Robert Scheidt

What other sports do you enjoy?

KK - Aerobics Sports , Beach Volleyball , Mountain Bike , Paddling

What does being nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards mean to you and how would you feel if you were voted the winner?

KK - It's a great honor to be nominated and take part in the ceremony with other great sailors, who inspire me daily and those legends in our sport. For any sportsman having their achievements and effort recognized is incredible. Being recognized gives me more motivation to continue our challange and I hope one day I will be able to inspire others in Brazil and beyond.
