What inspired you to take up sailing? Spending all my summer holiday cruising with my family since I was one years old
How did you buy your first boat? From an older sailor from the same club, my parents brought it
Which was your first sailing club? Marjaniemen Purjehtijat (still is)
First boat sailed? 22ft keelboat/ Optimist
First boat raced? Optimist
First Event competed in? Club Championship
First Event won? Small regatta in a lake in Finland with the Optimist
Principle achievements? 2001 World Championships - 1st
Principle achievements? 2000 World Championships - 4th
Principle achievements? 1999 World Championships - 5th
Principle achievements? Sydney Olympic Regatta - 5th
Principle achievements? 2000 European Championships - 2nd
Principle achievements? 2001 Princess Sofia Trophy - 1st and the overall winner of the regatta
Principle achievements? 1997 Junior European Championships - 1st
Detail the personal highlights of your sailing career to date? Winning my first International Championship in the Junior Europe Class in 1997, winning my first medal in the 'adults' Championships in the Europe Class in 2000 and of course winning the world championships this year
Future sailing aspirations? Winning an Olympic Gold medal in the Europe class, and in future years sailing other boats successfully
Briefly state what sailing means to you? It's a lifestyle. A day doesn't go past that I wouldn't think about sailing. Sailing has also taken me to places I probably wouldn't have been otherwise and I've met lots of amazing people
Who's had the greatest impact or inspiration in your sailing career and why? There is no single person, but a lot of them who have had an impact on my sailing. My coach for sure is one of the most important, my parents who made my sailing possible for a long time, successful Europe sailors like Margriet Matthysse, Carolijn Brower and Shirley Robertson
Who do you consider to be your sailing hero if any? Ellen MacArthur's work is impressive
Profession? Sailor and a student
What other sports do you participate in outside of sailing? Floorball, aerobics
Who do you consider to be the greatest sailor in the World and why? There are so many great sailors who I honour, that it's impossible to name a single one
Briefly state what being nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award 2001 means to you? It's a great honour. I've always considered the award winners as great sailors
If voted as the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year 2001, briefly say what will this mean to you? It would be more than I could imagine. It's one of the greatest recognition (maybe the biggest one) a sailor can get.
