2010 Kieler Woche

2010 Kieler Woche
Kiel, Germany

From Sailing Team Germany to Hydroptère, Boris Herrmann to Jochen Schümann, from Göran Petersson to Robert Scheidt, the focus of attention turns to Kieler Woche taking place from 18 - 27 June.
The German national team, Sailing Team Germany, will officially be presented to the public for the first time. The fastest sailing boat in the world, Hydroptère will be on show in Kiel.

ISAF President Göran Petersson (SWE) and ISAF Board Member Nazli Imre (TUR) will be staying to follow the ISAF Sailing World Cup racing, which Kiel is hosting for the second year. DSV (German Sailing Federation) President Rolf Bähr, two time America's Cup winner Jochen Schümann, ocean racer Tim Kröger (sails TP52 for Audi) and Boris Herrmann (winner of Portimao Global Ocean Race) will also be in Kiel.

The world's top sailors in the ten Olympic disciplines, the Paralympic class 2.4mR, sailors of 15 international classes, German Offshore Open, Offshore races in six OD classes, navy cutter races and the windjammer parade combined makes one of the largest sailing regattas in the world. 5,000 participants, 2,000 boats, 400 starts, 50 nations, 40 classes, ten racing areas and nine days are the key numbers of Kieler Woche.

ISAF Sailing World Cup (19 - 23 June)

At the ISAF Sailing World Cup most of the sailors are looking ahead to the Olympic Games 2012 in Weymouth. Many medallists from Qingdao (Beijing 2008) have retired so new top sailors hoping for Olympic medal success will be testing their progress at Kieler Woche.

In the traditionally strong Star fleet, German hopes are with Alexander Schlonski and Frithof Kleen, Robert and Philipp Stanjek, Johannes Babendererde and Timo Jacobs and new European Champions Johannes Polgar and Markus Koy. They will be competing against top sailors such as Robert Scheidt (BRA), who won Olympic gold and silver medals twice, Fredrik Loof (SWE) twice Olympic bronze medallist, Xavier Rohart (FRA) bronze medallist in Athens 2004, and title holder of last year's Kieler Woche Mark Mendelblatt and John van Schwarz (USA).

"Our biggest goal is a medal at the Olympics in 2012. Kieler Woche is always a milestone on the way there, especially in 2011 when it becomes the DSV qualification series", says Barbendererde looking forward to next year's event.

But Mendelblatt is not the only one who wants to defend his title from 2009. In the Mens 470 class Sime Fantale and Igor Marenic (CRO) will again have to repeat their best performances of 2009, the Croats won the Europeans and the Worlds but competition will be strong. Australian gold medallist from Qingdao, Malcolm Page who has teamed up with Mathew Belcher, will be hard to beat, whilst German hopes rest with Lucas Zellmer and Heiko Seelig (2nd at the Europeans 2009).

Tough times will be waiting for Rafal Szukiel (POL) in his Finn who has to defend his title against current World Champion Jonas Högh-Christensen (DEN), current European Champion Ivan Gaspic Kljakovic (CRO) and silver medallist at Beijing 2008 Zach Railey (USA).

American Paige Railey in the Laser Radial will be trying to repeat her success from last year's Kieler Woche. Strong competition will be coming from China with Lijia Xu (bronze medallist in Beijing 2008).

Other Germans returning from Kieler Woche 2009 will be on the starting line this year. Lennart Briesenick-Pudenz and Morten Massmann hoping for the yellow jersey in the 49er; Moana Delle in the RS:X Windsurfer and Heiko Kröger in the 2.4mR.

International Regatta (24 - 27 June)

From Thursday 15 international classes will take over from the Sailing World Cup classes to each determine their new Kieler Woche champion. Especially the 420 class, in their 50th year, have experienced a great rush with more than 160 entries. The 505 class is expected to be an exciting duel between the eternally young Kieler Woche specialists Wolfgang Hunger (17 victories) and his crew Julian Kleiner as well as Jacob and Jörgen Bojsen-Möller who finished first 16 times.

Offshore (19 - 26 Jun)

The re-establishment of the traditional Welcome Race to Eckernförde, the second half of the German Offshore Open and a separate racing area for One-Design classes are just some of the highlights of the offshore part of Kieler Woche.
