Nations Trophy Winners

The Nations Trophy is awarded to the best overall nation at each ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship. It was first introduced in 1991 as the Nations Cup and has been awarded every year since, becoming one of the most prestigious prizes in youth sailing. In 1999, the Nations Cup was replaced by the Volvo Trophy which was awarded for the last time in 2010. How It Works

Scores towards the Nations Trophy standings are taken on a race-by-race basis from the top four performers of each nation across all competing events.

Top ten race finishes translate into points: ten points for a first, nine for a second, all the way down to one point for a tenth place finish. After each race is completed across all events, a nation takes its four best scores and combines them to come up with their overall Nations Trophy score for that race (anywhere between 0-40 points).

The scores are added up as the championship progresses with the Nations Trophy going to the nation with the highest number of points at the end of racing. With a potential 40 points up for grabs, the standings can alter rapidly from one race to another, making the battle for the Nations Trophy one of the most exciting and keenly fought contests of the championship.
