Training Made Easy.......Ten Steps For MNAs To Get Started
Dan Jaspers
Dan Jaspers, ISAF Training and Development Manager, explains exactly how simple it can be for an ISAF Member National Authority (MNA) to get on track to having Internationally Recognized Training status.

Please note, translations of this document are available to download at the bottom of this page.

1. Be part of ISAF by becoming an MNA. This means recognition from the National Olympic Committee for that country and the representation of a significant majority of the yacht or sailing clubs and sailing organizations in the host country. See the website for details. http: and and www.sailing.org/becomeamember.php

2. Review the training already taking place by conducting a survey (simple club questionnaire). Many countries have clubs offering non formal training at small venues. This is a great foundation to build on nationally.

3. Co-ordinate a national framework for the monitoring of the training provided and those that it impacts. Where do students go after having learnt? How many people are instructing them? Who are they? This could be in the format of a national Seminar where all of these Clubs get together and discuss what they are doing.

4. Olympic Solidarity funding can be applied for to help develop a national sports structure, working with those in the MNA who would be responsible for the organisation of the National Training Programme. The application forms are on the ISAF Website. This can be alongside the other Olympic Solidarity programme for Instructor Training. Click here to learn more.

5. Download the ISAF Learn to Sail Training Document and use it as a guide to help you set up a national syllabus and scheme for the teaching of beginners in dinghies. This will form the most important part of your programme. Click here to learn more.

6. Apply for Olympic Solidarity funding through the National Olympic Committee of your country to host a five-day ISAF Instructor Workshop. This will help train more instructors to help run training at the clubs.

7. Get in touch with the Connect to Sailing Partners through the Connect to Sailing section on the ISAF website at www.sailing.org/connecttosailing and work towards getting the right equipment (Dinghies) and additional training support (long term Instructor Training) to support your growing MNA Training Structure. These Organisations and companies all have packages that will help grow without huge cost implications. Click here to learn more

8. Identify those individuals that are putting a great deal of their life into helping make the National Training Programme a success and contact the Training and Development Department at ISAF to organise a ‘Train the Trainers’ workshop. This will help give those individuals the chance to be trained up to the level where they are able to train others and provide the Training programme with clear direction and to be able to monitor its progress. A national Training manager may be identified during this process and may become the head figure of the training programme, reporting to the MNA Secretary General. Click here to learn more

9. Once the National Training Programme has grown and has direction and can stand on its own the National Training Manager would apply to ISAF to have the MNA Training programme inspected with the view to becoming accredited as providing ISAF Recognized Training. Applications for this would be filled out and sent to the Training and Development manager.

10. Once the Inspection has been completed and the MNA Programme is accredited, the MNA would be able to use all of the ISAF material on the website and reproduce it in their own language and have the logo on logbooks, books and any other material. This would help generate money and develop the National Training Programme further.

The best advice I can give is to contact me. There is no email that I will overlook and I am keen to help as many countries as I can. Participation in our sport is crucial and we can all do our bit to increase it. By sharing our ideas and experiences, the limits are endless.
