Obituary

It is with great sadness ISAF reports that Bob Shiels (USA), an ISAF/IYRU Committee Member for 20 years, has died.
Bob was a member of the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU, which changed its name to ISAF in 1996) Multihull Technical Committee from 1969-1985, becoming Chairman from 1977-1983 and continued as a consultant until 1992.

He was also a member of the IYRU Measurement Committee from 1977-1989.

He was particularly involved in the IYRU measurement and calculation of sail area rules and its application to the International C Class catamarans used in the International Catamaran Challenge Trophy known as the ‘Little America’s Cup’.

As well as his involvement with ISAF Committee’s, Bob was a Council Member on the World Sailing Speed Record Council, the International Authority recognized by ISAF for ratifying sailing speed records.

Bob passed away on 30 December 2009. ISAF extends our sincere sympathy and condolences to his wife Helen, brother and four grandchildren.
