KOREA MEASUREMENT CLINIC – APRIL 7-9, 2009
A successful introductory measurement clinic was held in Jinhae, South Korea recently in conjunction with the Korean Sailing Federation’s Korea Admirals Cup regatta held at the Korean Navy’s facility in Jinhae and hour out of Bussan.
The session participants were relative newcomers to measuring but showed a real thirst for knowledge and aptitude for measurement management. All had some level of dingy sailing experience and were well prepared for the clinic. All had done their home work which was assisted by the extensive work the Federation has done over the years in translating ISAF documents into Korean. As an example the KSF has translated the International Measurer’s Manual completely and it was used at the clinic by the participants.
The clinic was focussed on the basics of class event measurement with an emphasis on the practical aspects of measurement including extensive sail measurement experiences and the issues of dealing with competitors and coaches.
The participants then were the measurement team assisting David Sprague IM (CAN) the clinic instructor and Ms. Hyo-Kyoung Jang IM (KOR)the clinic organizer for the Admirals Cup regatta of over 200 boats where they put in practice the skills they had learned over the days before.
The clinic ran well thanks to the efforts of all the participants but especially Ms. Jinyoung who acted as translator but was an active participant in the clinic as well. A special thanks is also due to both the Korean Navy for their use of facilities and for the efforts of the Korean Sailing Federation for their help in putting on the clinic. The work the Koreans did bodes very well for the ISAF November conference’s success.
