IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships 2011
Weymouth and Portland, Great Britain

The RYA is this year organising the 2011 IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships, which will be staged at the home of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing competitions, the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
The IFDS Worlds, which is supported by UK Sport, is the most important event in the disabled sailing calendar, apart from the Paralympic Games, and will greet the shores of the UK from Thursday 30 June to Friday 8 July, 2011.

This highly competitive week of racing, which forms the second country qualifying event for the 2012 Paralympic Games, will welcome 190 sailors from across 25 different countries in the three Paralympic Classes; the 2.4mR, the SKUD and the Sonar.

Last year's championships were held in Medemblik, the Netherlands, where the Dutch produced an impressive performance on home waters winning gold medals in the 2.4mr and Sonar classes.
Skandia Team GBR also delivered their best performance at an IFDS Worlds to date by winning an impressive gold medal in the SKUD 18 class, a silver medal in Sonar class and a bronze in the 2.4mr class, a feat they will look to repeat at their home venue this summer.

Home grown sailors as well as international competitors will be keen to gain first-hand experience of the Paralympic venue in the run-up to 2012, making these championships a vital component of the international calendar.

Tim Hall, RYA Competitions Manager, commented, "We look forward to welcoming sailors from all over the world to another RYA World Class sailing event.

"Most sailors will have already competed at Skandia Sail for Gold, our multi-class ISAF World Cup event in June, but this is an opportunity for us to make an extra special effort to accommodate these Paralympic sailors.

"We are working with the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy to put on a really special event and consider the needs of the sailors to offer them a great experience on and off the water."

Esther Nicholls, Major Events Consultant for UK Sport, said, "UK Sport is committed to bringing world class sporting events to the UK ahead of 2012, and this event is part of what we believe to be the most comprehensive pre-Games events programme ever staged by an Olympic and Paralympic host nation."

She continued, "The IFDS World Championships will provide an invaluable opportunity for British sailors to experience international competition on home water, to prepare them for their home Paralympic Games, as well as a chance to build on the event staging capabilities of the sport."

Entry for the IFDS World Championships is now open via the official event website www.ifdsworlds2011.com. Entries will not be accepted after 6pm on Monday 13th June 2011.

The 2011 IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championships will be supported by UK Sport's World Class Events Programme, which distributes around £3.5 million of Lottery funding each year to support the bidding and staging costs of major events on home soil, as well as providing specialist support to organisers.
