Three-time Olympic medallist Alessandra SENSINI of Italy took the overall lead in the Women's Windsurfer event from China's Jian YIN with consistent finishes in Monday's two races.
On a day which began in breezy 15 knot winds and big seas but later dropped to 8 knots, SENSINI was at her best and scored a second and a fifth place result to sail past Jian YIN. With just one race of the Opening Series to go before Wednesday’s Medal Race, Alessandra SENSINI is closing in on her fourth Olympic medal; if it is gold she will become the most successful female sailor in Olympic history.

YIN is only two points off the lead after 8, 8 results in races 8 and 9. However, conditions should favour YIN on Tuesday for the final race of the Opening Series as weather forecasters predict lighter winds.

Another light-air performer, Jessica CRISP (AUS) dropped two spots on Monday. The world #1, Marina ALABAU (ESP) took over third place from CRISP, while Bryony SHAW (GBR) moved into fourth place thanks to a win in race 9, leaving the Australian in fifth.

Only 11 points separate the top five sailors, all of whom were favoured for medals before the Games.

The final race of the Opening Series will be sailed Tuesday at 11:00 on course area B. The top 10 will go through to the Medal Race on Wednesday.
