IOC Awards European Broadcast Rights for 2010 and 2012 Olympic Games to the EBU.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday announced that the Olympic broadcast rights for Europe for the XXI Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, in 2010, and the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012' have been awarded to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in a successful, major new agreement that covers a wide range of media categories, including multi-media and mobile telephony, and foresees extensive sublicensing.

This agreement with the EBU will help ensure the promotion of the Olympic values both during and outside Games time, achieve the widest possible audience and protect the basic principle of free-to-air viewing. Today's announcement concludes a process that began in March this year with the launch of an open tender, and resulted in the submission to the IOC of proposals from national broadcasters, multinational consortia and agencies. The contract covers pan-European rights to 51 countries. The territory of Italy is not included in the agreement. Further details of the agreement will follow in due course.

'Note: The host city for the Games of the XXX Olympiad will be chosen by a vote of the IOC Session on 7 July 2005, selecting from five Candidate Cities listed in the order of drawing of lot: Paris, New York, Moscow, London and Madrid.
