Laser Midwinters West
California, USA

The ISAF Grade 2 Laser Midwinters West took place over the weekend of 10-13 March in Carlifornia, USA. Nine races were completed in light to moderate breezes of 5-10 knots.
The 65-boat Laser standard fleet was dominated by two Canadian sailors, Dave WRIGHT and Bernard LUTTMER. Wright finished the regatta in first place, a comfortable 15 points ahead of his training partner Luttner, after a consistent series in which he only twice finished outside the top four. Wright should expect another leap up the ISAF World Sailing Rankings following this event - since 1 December 2004 he has already climbed 155 places and currently sits at number 63.

Luttmer's second place was also fairly emphatic, with third placed Ned JONES (USA) 29 points further back. The top placed junior boy was Royce WEBER (USA) who finished in seventh overall and Weber is rewarded by being announced today as the single-handed dinghy boys representative for the USA at the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2005 in Busan Korea.

In the 61-boat Radial division, Mexico's two time Olympian Tania ELIAS CALLES won seven of the nine races to earn a commanding 25-point lead over 2002 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Champion in the Byte, Jennifer SPALDING - a student from Vancouver, Canada. Leah HOEPFNER from Corpus Christi, Texas was the top junior in the division and took third place.

On the final day of the regatta, Kathy LUCIANO from Venice, California somehow attracted the attention of a baby seal - and sailed all three races with the seal on the deck of her Laser Radial. 'He seemed to enjoy the free ride,' Luciano reported, 'but he didn't hike very hard.'
