The 47-boat fleet in the BMW Round Ireland Race has been making steady progress since starting off Wicklow on Saturday evening with O2 Team Spirit in the lead and reported south of Youghal at 9.00 this morning.
Skipper David Nixon from Howth estimated that the 60 foot yacht would reach the famous Fastnet Rock Lighthouse off West Cork around 4.00pm today, well inside the time needed to set a new course record.
French rival City Jet Solune, the current Round Britian & Ireland record holder skippered by Jean-Pierre Chomett was one hour behind the leader when they passed the Tuskar Rock off the Wexford coast last night.
Meanwhile the fleet has passed the Tuskar Rock, the first reporting point on the course.
Navigator Mick LIDDY speaking from Fidessa Fastwave, the DK46 footer designed by Wicklow based Mark MILLS said that they were within sight of top Dutch entry Tonnerre de Breskens and making good progress. Full positions are available on the event website at the address below.
