With the publishing of the website and the presentation of the programme the official kick off for the ISAF World Sailing Games 2006 is done.
During a press conference attended by ISAF Director of Sailing Jerome Pels the organisers presented the structure of the World Sailing Games.
The venue will be the Lake Neusiedl, Austria's biggest lake and well known from a large number of major events: 470 Youth Worlds in 2003, 2002 Mistral European Championship and Laser Radial European Championship in the last years. Lake Neusiedl offers very good wind conditions, especially in May.
9 Events and 900 Competitors
The average water depth of 1.5 metres will not allow for a keelboat event, and as a replacement Team Racing will be introduced. The nine events are:
- Single-Handed Men and Women
- Double-Handed Men and Women
- Windsurfer Men and Women
- Multihull Open
- High Performance Double-Handed DinghyOpen
- Team Racing
The Team Racing, Multihull Open and High Performance Dinghy will offer best pictures for the media and generate considerable interest for spectators. The organisers are aiming for 900 competitors from over 60 countries and for over 100,000 spectators during the ten days of competition in May 2006.
Qualification Series and Finals
There will be a qualification series over the first five days. To reduce the time to reach the race areas the fleets will be located at five towns around the lake. For the finals the top 10 ranked sailors in the current ISAF World Sailing Rankings will be seated. This system offers a large number of countries and the best sailors in the world at the World Sailing Games.
ISAF Director of Sailing Jerome Pels pointed out the important value of the World Sailing Games for the Sailing sport, and praised the already running preparations - particularly the intended co-operations with other Sailing Federations in the Centope region as well as Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. Furthermore he praised the proposed type of event as the right way in the future for the world of sailing.
Official Contract Signed
An alliance for financial aid was with the four main parties (Federal Government, county, Austrian Sailing Federation and ISAF World Sailing Games 2006 execution LTD) was signed by Austria's Sport Ministry and the Governor of Burgenland afterwards at the Competence Centre for Sailing & Surfing in Neusiedl am See.
For better promoting the 2006 ISAF World Sailing Games the organizers presented the first version of the official website. Under www.worldsailinggames2006.at which will be regularly updated to inform competitors and officials.
