Sportstar Awards 2004
Lausanne

On Monday 18 October at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, a number of Olympic athletes were honoured by the television channel Eurosport, which presented the SportStar Awards 2004.
Among the 30 winners were many Olympic champions from last August in Athens. The SportStar Awards paid tribute to the athletes, both men and women, who were the pride of European sport in Athens, and who gave the Eurosport viewers the chance to experience some unforgettable moments.

One winner per sport
Each of the 28 International Sports Federations and the International Paralympic Committee were represented by the athletes. Among them were Siren SUNDBY (Norway), sailing; Zsuzsanna VOROS (Hungary), modern pentathlon; Anke KÜHN (Germany), hockey; Katherine ALLEN (Austria), triathlon; Alina KABAEVA (Russia), artistic gymnastics; Yelena ISINBAYEVA (Russia), pole vault; Tony ESTANGUET (France), canoe/kayak; and Anky VAN GRUNSVEN (Netherlands), gold medallist in dressage; not forgetting Switzerland's Marcel FISCHER, fencing gold medallist.

Fair play to honour
The athletes present were not all Olympic champions. Some did not even win medals in Athens. They were nominated, however, because they represent the Olympic spirit and defend the Olympic values. Furthermore, they inspire sports amateurs and enable them to follow the Olympic dream.

Mission to Athens
During the gala dinner after the ceremony, trophies were given to the four athletes present out of the eight who had been the subject of a Eurosport reportage entitled Mission to Athens. Journalists had followed around these young people during their preparation for the Games and during their time in Athens before and after the competitions.
