Skandia Dodges Typhoons To Arrive In Hong Kong
RHKYC China Coast Race Week
Skandia, the super-maxi will be competing in the Royal Hong Kong YC China Coast Race Week 22 - 24 October and then going onto race 652 miles offshore from Hong Kong to Nha Trang on October 26, taking between two and three days to get there.
She will carry between 10 and 14 crewmembers during this campaign including skipper and owner Grant Wharington and round the world yachtsman Barney Walker.
Two of the crew members will be Mark KROENING, 24 from Auckland, New Zealand and Mark BARTLETT, 19 from Essex, England from the British-run Skandia Yachting Academy. They were selected by Grant WHARINGTON and sailing legend John BERTRAND after they spent two days sailing with them at Skandia Cowes Week in August 2004. The aim of the Skandia Yachting Academy is to create super-fit amateur young yachtsmen and women from around the world and this will be the two recruits' first taste of racing on such a large yacht
"We are looking forward to welcoming our new recruits, and teaching them all we can about super-maxi offshore and inshore racing, "
says Wharington. "Our visit to Hong Kong marks the start of a challenging couple of seasons ahead, continuing with the Sydney Hobart, Skandia Geelong Week and then on to Europe, Skandia Cowes Week, the Fastnet and much more. We are confident that Skandia and the team will stand up well against the competition, and can't wait for it all to begin."
"It's great news that Skandia, the super-maxi is competing in such a prestigious race and we're also delighted that two of our Skandia Yachting Academy recruits have the opportunity to join Grant and his superb crew to experience big yacht racing at its best,"
says Andre OSZMANN, Skandia's group marketing director.
