During October 2010 the Royal Yacht Club de Tanger hosted an ISAF Level 3 Technical Course for Coaches on behalf of the Moroccan MNA, delivered by ISAF appointed Trainer Rob Clark.
Specifically targeting the skills required to take established sailors and help them develop the techniques to coach race training within their club, region or country, 13 candidates from across Morocco were nominated by their clubs, bringing a variety of existing knowledge and experiences to share with the group.
The course started with an in depth look at coaching techniques and how to identify and develop specific skills followed by helping each candidate to create their own race training programme which they could use as a template for their individual clubs. From there the group looked at the key techniques for coaching the various elements that are involved in sailor development including boat handling, rules and tactics, strategy and regatta preparation whilst also focusing on individual sailor development taking into consideration different learning styles and associated coaching techniques.
For the final two days the group were joined by a number of national and regional journalists, radio and TV stations, keen to find out more about the development of sailing within Morocco and the steps that are being taken by the International Sailing Federation and the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Yachting à Voile
to help continue this progression and create a solid future for the sport in the country.
The course was considered to be a great success by all the candidates and as a result the Moroccan sailing federaiton are hoping to be able to organise another Level 3 course during 2011 to continue their ongoing sailing development programme.
Technical Director for the Moroccan Federation and ISAF International Judge Mohamed Zanzoul
said of the course 'Thank you to ISAF for sending Rob Clark on this course. We have had a good cooperation and I co-ordinated well with him in this course. Everyone here in the federation is very happy.'
Dan Jaspers, ISAF Training and Development Manager added 'This is the first Level 3 Course that ISAF has run and we are very glad for the support and feedback of the Moroccan Federation. This course is a vital link to all those MNAs that are looking at developing existing Coaches and experienced racers to be able to identify and nurture talented young sailors in order to help them train to national and international competition standards. We hope that many more MNAs will also see the importance of this course.'
