Estonia's top women Randmaa MERICI and Agnes LILL needed a good result to secure victory and the unofficial women's title, and were on track and on the right side making the first mark in front of the fleet and staying there for the entire race. They were followed closely by the Greeks Georgios VASILAS and Evangelos MITTAKIS and then the Israeli girls Adi GILBOA and Ravid KANONICH.
Conditions increased to seven to nine knots for the final race of the 14 race series and the Estonian women were intent on making it their day. MERICI and LILL sailed to the unofficial 470 Junior Women's World Championship title while the France's Camille LECOINTRE and Gwendolin LEMAITRE, after leading all week, suffered their two worst results for the regatta and gave up gold for silver. Impressively, the youngest women's team in the fleet and recipients of the 470 Women's Support Grant from Israel, Adi GILBOA and Ravid KANONICH, took bronze.
FANTELA and MARENIC stamped their authority on the Championship from the very first race and with their recent European title win and seven wins and three second places in St. Petersburg, have built themselves a perfect springboard for the ISAF Grade W 470 World Championship, which begins in San Francisco, USA in just under three weeks time.
The Greek team of VASILAS and MITTAKIS started the last day in fourth place but sailed brilliantly to jump into second overall for a Junior Worlds' silver medal followed by the Polish team of Patryk PIASECKI and Jacek PRYZYBYLAK who add a Worlds' bronze to go with their silver in the 470 Junior Europeans.
After a sometimes trying week, the teams will enjoy the hospitality of St. Petersburg tonight and look forward to next year's Junior Worlds in Flensburg, Germany in June 2006.
