49er World Championship 2010
Freeport, Bahamas

The Spanish duo of Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez raced into a 19-point overall lead as light winds hit the Bahamas for the first day of gold fleet racing at the 49er Worlds.
Light air finesse was the key at the 49er World Championship on Thursday with three races held. Five to eight knots of wind was all that could muster to keep the first day of the finals for the gold fleet alive. Iker Martinez and Xabier Fernandez of Spain continued their run to the top by sailing a 1, 2, 10 in the three-race day to increase their overall lead to 19 points. John Pink and Rick Peacock (GBR), who managed with mid-fleet finishes, move up to second overall.

British teams also hold third and fourth place withStevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes (GBR) and Paul Brotherton and Mark Asquith (GBR) following up. Brotherton and Asquith had a good day which moved them past the Sibello brothers of Italy, Pietro Sibello and Gianfranco Sibello, who fell to sixth overall. Emmanuel Dyen and Stéphane Christidis of France hold fifth. Defending World Champions Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen (AUS) lie in 10th place overall.

Racing began an hour earlier than scheduled in anticipation of the wind shutting off. After the gold fleet finished, the silver fleet was sent out but no races were held and the silver will be the first start in the morning. The race committee went swimming.

Predictions for the wind tomorrow are for mid-teens with warmer temperatures.
