Anna Tunnicliffe and team win in Calpe

Xll International Women's Match Race Criterium 2010
Calpe, Spain

Reigning champion and holder of second place in the ISAF World Rankings, Claire Leroy (FRA), lost the final battle against Anna Tunnicliffe's USA crew by 3-1.
Tamara Echegoyen of Spain performed well to get to the semi-finals, but in the petit finale had to surrender to Australian Katie Spithill .

The French crew skippered by Claire Leroy faced the Spanish girls of Tamara Echegoyen's team in the semi-finals, the first one to get three wins going straight to the final. While the French won the opening match the Iberian quickly answered by getting the second and points were even. In the third race specialist Claire Leroy didn't make any mistakes and crossed the finish line with a good margin. Yet it was the fourth match that proved Leroy's abilities in the start box and her experience in maintaining control throughout the legs got her a place in the final.

The second semi-final was a truly Anglo-Saxon affair, with the Australian Katie Spithill facing American skipper Anna Tunnicliffe in a very level match, so much so that it was necessary to dispute a fifth race to decide the other finalist of the Calpe Criterium. The American sailors were able to get a small lead at the start and keep it up to the finishing line.

The final was also fought as the best of five matches, the first going to Anna Tunnicliffe's team, the second to Claire Leroy's thanks to a clear and winning start. The third match was the most closely fought one and went to the Americans in what witnesses on the water said it was "impeccable" match racing. The crew form the USA thus succeeded in getting their first title at the Calpe XII Criterium Internacional Femenino.

Many spectators also followed the petite finale, where the "local heroin" Tamara Echegoyen raced against Australian Katie Spithill, sister of the America's Cup skipper and winner James Spithill. Spithill was able to inflict a very important penalty on her adversaries in the third match, but she suffered a penalty of her own in the fourth match however, showing better speed she managed to save enough metres to do her penalty turn and cross the finish line ahead of the Spanish team, climbing on the lowest step of the podium with two wins to one.
