All classes sailed with two days remaining at the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Palma.
Most classes were able to drop their worst result meaning the medal race slots are up for grabs.
The weather conditions divided the day into two halves. The morning began with a 15 knot north-westerly but it dropped causing a break in racing. The fleets were sent out again later in the afternoon to race in an 8 knot westerly.
Israeli team
Gideon Kliger and
Eran Sela celebrated Gideon's 30th birthday, taking the lead in Men's 470.
"We had a bad start in the second race" said Eran, while Gideon added
"It was the worst result possible crossing the finishing line in 34th position." But with their discard they open up a four point lead over the French pair
Pierre Leboucher and
Vincent Garos with the Australian's
Mathew Belcher and
Malcolm Page back in the mix.
The leading team in the Women's 470 fleet are
Giulia Conti and
Giovanna Micol from Italy followed by French sailors,
Ingrid Petitjean and
Nadège Douroux who scored 1,2,2 in the days racing. Petitjean said
"It was a good day of racing with interesting weather conditions, three races, three winds".
The French lead in the 49er class with
Emmanuel Dyen and
Stéphane Christidis taking a seven point advantage over the chasing British crews of
Stephen Morrison and
Ben Rhodes and
Chris Draper and
Peter Greenhalgh.
Spanish Finn sailor
Rafa Trujillo keeps the lead after three intense races completed on Wednesday. Tied on points for second and third are
Jonathan Lobert of France and
Andrew Mills from Great Britain. Race wins went to Jonathan Lobert (FRA),
Giorgio Poggi (ITA) and
Ed Wright (GBR), with many sailors having a mixed day to keep the points very close at the top.
An outstanding day in the Laser class for
Javier Hernandez (ESP) has him climbing to the top of the results board. Second place Croatian sailor
Tonci Stipanovi? holds second with
Nick Thompson (GBR) in third.
Czech Republic sailor
Veronika Fenclová and
Susana Romero Steensma from Spain keep their exciting battle for the lead in the Laser Radial fleet.
Tina Mihelic from Croatia is five points adrift in third.
In the Men's RS:X class, Greek sailor
Byron Kokalanis climbs to the top of the leader board after a second and third place in the day's races
Shahar Zubari from Israel falls to second place followed closely by New Zealand sailor
Tom Ashley
The European battle continues in the Women's RS:X class between Great Britain, France, Spain and Italy with Italian sailor
Alessandra Sensini just one point in the lead followed by Britain's
Bryony Shaw with
Charline Picon from France and
Laura Linares of Italy sharing third.
Italy also leads the Star fleet with team
Diego Negri and
Ferdinando Colaninno followed closely by Swiss sailors Flavio
Flavio Marazzi and
Enrico De Maria, Sweden's
Fredrik Loof crewed by German sailor
Alexander Schlonski are tied with equal points in third and fourth position.
The pairings for the quarter finals have been decided in the Women Match Racing event with
Claire Leroy's team from France up against
Nicky Souter's team from Australia;
Silke Hahlbrock's team from Germany against
Sally Barkow from the USA;
Lotte Meldgaard pedersen's Danish team against
Renee Groeneveld's Dutch team and
Katie Spithill's team from Australia against
Lucy Macgregor's British team.
The 41st Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia MAPFRE will be held in Mallorca from 27 March-2 April, organized by four clubs of the bay of Palma (Club Nàutic S'Arenal, Real Club Náutico de Palma, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa and Escuela Nacional de Vela Calanova), as well as the Real Federación Española de Vela and the Federación Balear de Vela, together with the Govern de les Illes Balears, the Consell de Mallorca and Palma and Llucmajor city councils. The collaborators of the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia Mapfre are the Consejo Superior de Deportes, the Federación Española de Deportes de Personas con Discapacidad Física, the Ports Authority, Ports de les Illes Balears, the coastal department of the Ministry of Environment and companies Ultramar Express and Acciona.
