Ice Breaker Cup 2005
Gothenburg, Sweden

Local knowledge paid dividens in Gothenburg with Sweden's sailors monopolizing the podium positions in the ISAF Grade 3 Ice Breaker Cup at the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club. Mattias RAHM (SWE) beat Johnnie BERNTSSON (SWE) in the final to repeat his victory of two years ago.
Last weekend Langedrag, Gothenburg was the host once again to an assortment of sailors from Scandinavia and further a field including a very healthy representation from the top thirty ISAF World Match Race Rankings . Finland's Staffan LINDBERG was present trying to repeat his victory from last year and continue his current good vein of form which saw him win the recent JPMorgan Winter Challenge Final in Great Britain. A victory that took him back into the top-ten of the ISAF World Match Race Rankings at number seven.

However for LINDBERG this was not to be his year, in the semi final he came up against 2003 winner, RAHM, and it was the home sailor who prevailed taking the match two-nil. The other semi-final was an all Swedish affair and on paper looked like an evenly matched tussle with ISAF World Match Race Ranking's number 16, Björn HANSEN going up against number 19, Johnnie BERNTSSON. Indeed it was a close fight but BERNTSSON edged it and moved into the final thanks to a two-one victory.

For RAHM 2003 had been a successful year, not just with victory here in Gothenburg, but also a place in the ISAF World Match Race Ranking's top twenty which he held until October 2003. Positioned at 24 in the rankings of 23 March 2005 victory here in this ISAF Grade 3 event could once again see RAHM back in the exclusive top-twenty.

With HANSEN taking third place and an all Swedish lineup for the final the script was going exactly to plan for the home fans. And it got better with Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club's RAHM defeating BERNTSSON in the final to win the Ice Breaker Cup 2005.

The highest placed women was Linda RAHM (SWE) who finished sixth overall.
