At the age of twenty His Majesty had his greatest sailing success, winning the gold medal in the Dragon in the 1960 Olympics in Rome. Since 1960 His Majesty has been involved with ISAF and has been a member of several committees. In 1965 he was elected ISAF Vice President of Honour and served in that role for 29 years until in 1994 he was elected as ISAF President of Honour.
His Majesty, a member of the IOC since 1963, and an Honorary Member since 1974, was delighted that the Olympic Games returned to Athens in 2004: 'To have the Olympic Games in my country was such an excitement and a dream that I've had always. I remember I had the privilege of holding the flag when our team in 1960 came in to the stadium and the roar of the crowd was something that is still in my ears,' stated His Majesty during an interview with 'Today' host Katie COURIC.
His victory in Rome is another stirring memory: 'Getting the gold medal, was the greatest feeling of my life, other than getting engaged to my wife. And to hear the national anthem of your country, and knowing you are not doing it for yourself, you are doing it for your country, is very important.'
Proceeds from the dinner and the reception will support the Canadian Olympic Sailing Team.
