The City of Perth has 'added power to Perth 2011's sails' in moving towards the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships, signing on as an Event Partner.
Perth 2011 Event Director John Longley said that the City of Perth's strong support provided a significant boost to the Sailing World Championships in several key areas.
"We are very proud to have the City of Perth as 'part of the Perth 2011 team'. They are a logical partner, as our positioning statement - The Dream Begins in Perth! - highlights our relationship to the state's capital city,"
Mr Longley said.
"The City of Perth has a history of supporting international sailing events of the highest calibre, demonstrated with their ongoing support of the prestigious Australia Cup,"
"The relationship with the City of Perth will allow us to hold a community parade in the city, which will add to the atmosphere of the Sailing World Championships Opening Ceremony, in Perth city, and simultaneously promote Western Australia's magnificent capital city."
Hosting the Opening Ceremony in the City of Perth will see the Lord Mayor and Perth City Council as key members of the dignitary party to officiate at the Opening Ceremony of the Sailing World Championships.
Broadcasts from the waters off Fremantle will see all the action of the Sailing World Championships being directly beamed onto the big screen at the Northbridge Piazza.
As part of this new partnership, the City of Perth Lord Mayor will welcome the Emerging Nations Programme (ENP) athletes attending the next two ENP Programmes in late 2010 and early 2011 to the City of Perth. The City of Perth's involvement will see sailing brought to the city's doorstep with the ENP Sailing Training Programmes and mini ENP Regattas held on Perth waters, near the Bell Tower.
"We will work with Perth 2011 to activate the Perth waters in front of Barrack Street for the upcoming ENP regattas and related activities, as we did for the recent Australia Cup regatta,"
explained City of Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi.
Lord Mayor Scaffidi noted the importance of international events like Perth 2011 in further promoting Perth on the international stage.
"Perth is renowned for its beautiful waters and reliable wind, making it the ideal host city for the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships next year (3-18 December, 2011),"
said Lord Mayor Scaffidi.
"Perth 2011 provides an incredible opportunity to showcase our magnificent city to an international audience, whilst attracting thousands of visitors from around the world. We are proud to join in the excitement that is Perth 2011,"
