RHKYC Nautica Autumn Regatta

In contrast to day 1 of the RHKYC Nautica Autumn Regatta, 65 boats braved a Club start line for Race 2 in heavy squalls and winds of 20 knots.
This led to early worries that in finishing the start sequence, the committee boat would not be on station by the time Mandrake (Frank Pong) took line honours for the Cruiser class.

In the event all classes started on time, and Mandrake came home in just over an hour, claiming line honours and IRC race 2 on corrected time. All other classes were keenly contested, with the consistent conditions giving sailors an unparalleled chance to test themselves against their peers.

Race 3 conditions were more variable, with the wind dropping to 10 knots as the sun made a brief appearance, then gusting to 27knots as more rain squalls came in from the East. As the Race Officer gave constant warnings to boats for encroaching early on the Hung Hom start line, Dragon class were so keen to start their final race that four boats were OCS, leading to a general recall. Cruisers, however, made a perfect start to their final race, with Mandrake again pulling into a commanding lead, however her subsequent line honours and corrected time first place were insufficient to make up for her previous day's OCS, pushing her into second place overall behind Getafix (Croc Mathilde).

Worsening conditions caused more problems for the later finishing classes, with many boats broaching, three Etchells shredding spinnakers on their final run and eight boats retiring from various classes. Overall, however, Race Officer Graham Hicks declared it to be an extremely successful regatta, with the breezy conditions enjoyed by all the sailors.
