Around Hong Kong Island Race
Hong Kong

Plans for the reinstatement of the Around Hong Kong Island Race are now well underway and, with the support of the Hong Kong Government, the 20th Anniversary of the first circumnavigation promises to be a most interesting challenge.
With Oracle Sailors Gavin BRADY, Jon GUNDERSON, Ian GORDON and Jamie GALE set to take on a K-Challenge team of John CUTLER, Cameron DUNN, John ZISKIND and Roman TROUBLE in locally based boats, speculation is rife as to how they will fare with the vagaries of Hong Kong conditions.

In order to ensure that they get the best racing possible, they will also compete in the China Coast Regatta on the preceding two days, with local sailors eager to pitt their skills and knowledge against the professionals.

Competitors will also include the winner of the 2003 Melbourne to Osaka double-handed race, Brian PETERSEN, in Maverick II, and Class boats will be fighting over the services of winners of Soling Olympic Gold in 1976 and 1980, Valdemar BANDOLOWSKI and Eric HANSEN and winners of 1988 and 1996 Soling Olympic Gold, Thomas FLACH and Bernd JAKEL.

Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra of Denmark will also compete, continuing a long sailing association with RHKYC and adding a touch of glamour to the week's events.

At this time, confirmation of attendance is awaited from a number of top windsurfers including Barbara Kendall and Lee Lai Shan and it is hoped that a sizeable fleet will help ensure a thoroughly memorable anniversary race.
