The Hobie 16 North American Continental Championship begins on Monday 29 September, with racing through Friday 3 October. The Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association in Dewey Beach, Delaware will host the regatta.
Fifty-nine teams have pre-registered for the event and the final number is expected to be in the seventies by the end of registration on Monday.
Three other Hobie events are taking place at the same venue over the weekend: the Hobie 14, Hobie 16 Womens and Hobie 16 Jr. North AmericanContinental Championships. Past Continental Champions Wally and Tyler MYERS, from Marmora NJ, will be the ones to watch this week. The Myers have been dominant in the Hobie 16 for years but failed to retain the title of Continental Champions last year in light and fluky winds.
Challenging the Myers for the top spot will be US Pan Am Games team members Paul and Mary Ann HESS from Napa CA. The Myers biggest threat however may come from Armando NORIEGA from Mexico City sailing with his father. Armando was a silver medallist in the recent Pan Am Games.
As with most big championships there are about ten other teams that could possibly win the event. With five scheduled days of racing and no maximum number of races, the winning team will be the one with the most endurance and the most consistent scores.
