Lightning World Championship
Miami Beach, Florida

Following the official opening ceremony on Saturday night, day one of the Lightning World Championship got under way yesterday in beautiful weather but not much breeze.
After waiting on the water for the wind to fill in for racing, followed by a couple of general recalls, the fleet of 60 boats from eleven countries finally got away to start the first and only race of the day at 1.00pm local time.

From the provisional results of the day's racing, 15 boats were OCS and given a 20% penalty, this included the leading pair in race one, Juan Reid (CHI) and Tito Gonzalez (CHI). Reid won the race but was handed the starting penalty, wheras Gonzalez was originally OCS's then reinstated in first position.

A number of protests are still outstanding from racing yesterday.
