Eleven teams representing Austria, Bahamas, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway Switzerland, and the USA are currently competing on Lake Thun for the prestigious 5.5 Metre Gold Cup.
The first race was sailed in light conditions on the waters of Thun. Half way up the first beat, 'Artemis' (NOR) profited from a windshift that put them in the front short before the first mark. After the first downwind leg, they had established a secure lead of little more than 20 seconds, which they did not lost until the finish line.
After heavy thunderstorms during the night, the fleet left the harbour at lunch time on day two for the second race. The British team with their brand new boat went ahead together with the 'Maitresse' (NED) and 'Ali Baba' (SUI), but lost their lead by failing to hoist the spinnaker after the mark. The 'Ali Baba', 'Addam3' (FIN) and 'Maitresse' were left to fight for the lead.
On the second beat, the wind already died down and it was the defending Champions the Marazzi's from Switzerland on Ali Baba leading from the 'Maitresse', 'Addam3' and 'Artemis'. On the downwind leg, the last of the pack, the Norwegians on 'Artemis', attacked by choosing the left side of the lake but nobody reacted to that tackle and on the next mark, 'Artmeis' was in the lead again. Unfortunately during the third beat, the wind died completely and the race committee had to call off regatta number 2.
The Race Committee hope to run races two, three and four today.
