2003 Swedish Match Cup

Malin KÄLLSTRÖM (SWE) goes from strength to strength after her maternity leave. Yesterday afternoon she made it to the final after defeating Danish Anette STRÖM decisively 3-0.
Marie BJÖRLING, also from GKSS, had a tougher way to go. It was not until the finish line in the fifth match that world champion Malin MILLBOURN admitted herself beaten 2-3.

"It was nice getting revenge after the World Championships but she really gave us a hard time" said a relieved Marie BJÖRLING.
After her match against Anette STRÖM, Källström commented,"It's never as easy as it might look. Especially in the first match we felt very nervous and even if we were in the lead it wasn't until the finish line that we felt sure we'd won."

Since going on maternity leave, Malin KÄLLSTRÖM has fallen down the rankings and only made it to the ISAF Grade 1 Swedish Match Cup through winning the qualifiers in Denmark earlier in the year.

Marie BJÖRLING and Malin MILLBOURN gave us some really exciting sailing in their semi-final. Marie won the first one, then Malin won two in a row putting pressure on Marie to win the fourth. Which she did and then they went on to a fifth and decisive match. Malin got a penalty in the pre-start but started well and led the match until the last tack. Then when she made her penalty turn, Marie passed her and in spite of a good recovery by Malin, Marie was first across the finish line, after which the whole crew jumped up and down with sheer joy. "What a lovely feeling of relief, said Marie. "Now we have two days to relax and recharge for the final against Malin Källström on Saturday."

Open Event

Mattias RAHM continues to win in the ISAF Grade 1 Swedish Match Cup and in the last matches in group 2 on Wednesday, he was only beaten by Danish Jesper BANK. Jesper RADICH (DEN) also finished on 6 wins to 1 loss. Beating Jesper RADICH helped Mattias win his group and so he doesn't have to go through the knock-out series to be sailed today "We'll use that time to sit on the rocks and watch the competition." Mattias reveals. He also explains that the recent successes are all due to a change of tactics. "We try to sail our own race and not get into any situations where the umpires get to decide the match to our disadvantage. The competition is so good that we must be happy for every win and then we have to run our own show."

At the other end of the leaderboard it was also tight and again a Dane, Jes GRAM-HANSEN had to give way to a Swede, Mikael LINDQVIST. Both had 6 losses and 1 win but LINDQVIST had won over GRAM-HANSEN. "Sometimes you're lucky and win over the right guy" Mikael commented as Jesper rapidly leaves the bridge. For his part the ISAF Grade 1 Swedish Match Cup is over and he finishes 15.
