Girls Dominate Race 8, India Makes Its Mark On Final Day In Race 9

Asian Optimist Sailing Championship

The first race started out with light winds at 5-6 knots building up to 8-10 knots in the last and final race of the championship.
There were apprehensions that the first race of the day might be delayed since the wind had not settled, but the race committee, managed to start the first race only five minutes late.

Malayasia's Faizani BIN YAHAYA (MAS 95) taking the gun in the race, closely followed by Griselda KHNG (SIN 515) who finished 2nd. Rufina Tan HONG MUI (MAS 99) finished 3rd . The girls therefore dominated the fleet in Race 8 grabbing the 2nd , 3rd positions.

The Indian sailors did well on the final day with Trunal HELEGAOKAR finishing 2nd in the 9th race. In fact four Indian sailors finished among the top 10 in the same race.

In first place was China (CHN 112) Zhicong ZENG, which takes his tally to four guns in this championship and making him the Asian Optimist Champion 2003. Zeng outshone the competition throughout the championship.

Singapore bagged the 2nd and 3rd positions. Gregory Thean YEW HO (SIN 369) finished overall in 2nd position with Griselda KHNG (SIN 515) finishing 3rd.

The top two Indian sailors overall were Trunal HELEGAONKAR (7th) , Abhishek MHATRE (11th).

This brings us to the end of The Dockendale IODA Asian Sailing Championship 2003. It was well attended by 58 participants from 12 countries.
