J/22 World Championship
Porto San Rocco

41-year-old Dutch sailor Den Engelsman, already winner of the J22 European title and current national champion, has won the J22 World Championship at Porto San Rocco (Trieste).
Weather conditions have strongly influenced the sailing race week, organized by the "Società velica di Barcola e Grignano" with the collaboration of Sailing Planet. Strong north-east winds over 40 knots first, then calm sea enabled to compete only five of the thirteen scheduled races, nevertheless sufficient to make the championship valid.

Races were held with a wind blowing over 20 knots. The supremacy of the Nordic countries on the podium: Den Engelsman (skippering the Nile Dutch Africa Line) won with 7 points and counting three seconds and a first, ahead of fellow countryman Nil BOC and Denmark's Kim CHRISTENSEN. The first Italian was Gabriele BENUSSI in fourth place, skippering Banca BSI.

Porto San Rocco, during 2003 sailing season has hosted many important events, from Italy's IMS races to the J22 World Championship: "We are satisfied with the image we gained from these events and with the fact that all sailors felt at ease" - said the director of the Port, Roberto SPONZA, "We aim at hosting other sailing events: for 2004 we are already in touch with the Federation; we would like to organize IMS 600 World Championship in collaboration with the major sailing clubs of the area".
