Building on the inaugural Athlete Participation Programme launched last year at the 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games, ISAF has pledged financial support to assist athletes from developing sailing nations at this year's ISAF Youth Worlds.

For the first time in 2002, ISAF introduced the `Athlete Participation Programme', providing financial support to assist athletes from developing sailing nations to participate in an ISAF Event.

The Athlete Participation Programme at the 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games supported athletes' participation by means of travel and entry fee subsidies, together with coaching expertise. At the 2002 ISAF World Sailing Games, 38 sailors from 12 different countries, representing five continents, ranging in age from 16 to 47, benefited from the programme.

ISAF is delighted to be able to announce that the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme will be available for athletes participating in the 2003 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship taking place from 17-26 July 2003 in Madeira, Portugal.

In order to encourage participation and assist athletes from those countries who may not otherwise be able to participate in the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships, ISAF is pleased to offer financial subsidies to assist with travel to the event and the entry fee. Eligible MNA's may apply for full support or partial support to cover their athlete's travel and/or entry fee.

ISAF is also planning to offer specific coaching support to those sailors benefiting from the Athlete Participation Programme.

ISAF's aim is that the Athlete Participation Programme will encourage and support sailors' participation in the 2003 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship and particularly encourage participation from new nations.

Commenting on the programme, ISAF President, Paul Henderson said: "Initiated by ISAF in 2002, this is the second year ISAF has supported this programme. The 2002 World Sailing Games demonstrated how significantly such a programme can benefit sailors and ultimately the sport. ISAF looks forward to assisting those athletes from developing sailing nations and helping them in their aspirations to succeed at the highest level of our sport. Today's youth are tomorrow's future, and the ISAF Youth Worlds is the training ground for the future's top sailors."

Full details have been sent to those ISAF Member National Authorities eligible to apply to the Programme. If any MNA's have any queries, please contact the ISAF Secretariat at secretariat@isaf.co.uk
