From tomorrow until 14 June, a fleet of over 80 Tornados, will take part in the European Championship of the class held in Cagliari in the South of Sardinia, one of the largest Italian islands.
The organizing authority of the event is the Yacht Club Cagliari located in the Marina Piccola, in the Poetto Gulf. 24 countries are represented in the championship including Argentina, Australia, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, South-Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and Hungary.
It is the second time that a Tornado European Championship has been held in Cagliari: the previous time being in 1994. Yacht Club Cagliari previously held a Tornado World Championship in1991 and it was won by local sailors Giorgio ZUCCOLI and Angelo GLISONI. Ten races on Italian Championship courses will be sailed. According to weather conditions the first gun tomorrow will be fired at 12.00am.
Many champions will be sailing on the race course trying to win the Continental title. Sydney gold medallist, Austrian Roman Hagara/Hans Peter Steinacher will be firm contenders, as will Australians Darren Bundock /John Forbes, who won a silver medal in Sydney and are the current reigning World Champions.
