Fleur de Lys Comfortable on Day Four

8 Metre World Championship
La Trinité sur mer

Race 5 was sailed in the afternoon of the reserve day in a westerly breeze of 10-14 kts. A familiar pattern emerged early on with Fleur de Lys establishing a comfortable lead and the rest of the modern boats having a close fight behind.
At the first mark Yquem was second close behind Fleur, followed by Aluette, Gefion, Mystery and Lafayette. By the end of the first run Lafayette, back in good order with her spreader repaired, had overtaken Mystery and Gefion. Aluette briefly took second place, but on the second run Yquem managed to hold the inside berth to start the last beat back in second.

By then Lafayette was right behind them and tacked off quickly after the mark. When she tacked back on a slight shift she had to dip Aluette and it was anybody's race. The wind then went slightly further to the left and when Lafayette came back on the finish layline, Aluette was able to tack underneath her. Lafayette might have been able to roll over Aluette, but Yquem then tacked right on Lafayette to prevent it happening as it was in Yquem's interests for Aluette to be between them. They finished only seconds apart, over two minutes behind Fleur sailing her own race serenely in front.

Vision led all the way in the Sira Cup fleet, finishing seventh behind Gefion. Bona was next and has now retaken the Sira Cup lead as she won reinstatement from her previous race's OCS as the RC had mistaken her for another boat. Bona managed to show with witnesses that she was in a different part of the line than the RC had said.
Amorevita, complete with new spreaders, beat Catina VI for the first time to take second in the Coupe Cartier fleet behind Bona.
