Kieler Woche

Kiel week concluded yesterday and with it the perfect opportunity for ranking points in the final multi class Grade 1 Event before the ISAF World Sailing Championships in Cadiz in September.
Results from Kiel will go towards the next ISAF World Sailing Rankings for Olympic Classes, which are to be released on Wednesday 2 July.

Chris DRAPER sailing with the 2000 Olympic silver medallist Simon HISCOCKS fought off stiff competition to take gold on the final day. Scoring a sixth place in the final race in light conditions, Draper and Hiscocks took the overall lead from Peter HANSEN and Soren HANSEN from Denmark and world champions Iker MARTINEZ and Xabier FERNANDEZ of Spain.

Double Olympic medallist Ben AINSLIE won silver in the Finn class behind the 1996 Olympic silver medallist Sebastien GODEFROID of Belgium. This pairing has enjoyed a close battle all year with Ainslie beating Godefroid at the recent European championships but this time it was Godefroid who gained the advantage. Emilios PAPATHANASIOU of Greece finished one point behind Ainslie in third place overall.

After twelve races Maciej GRABOWSKI of Poland took the gold in the Laser class and double Olympic champion and six times world champion Robert SCHEIDT won silver. A Bronze medal went to Paul GOODISON. A final race was started on the last day but was abandoned when the wind dropped off halfway around the course.

In the Tornado class, John LOVELL and Charlie OGLETREE (USA) won overall with two Britsh sailors finishing the top three. Unfortunately due to the light conditions only three races were sailed but Hugh STYLES and Adam MAY sailed consistently scoring a sixth, seventh and a first place to finish second overall The newly formed team of Rob WILSON and Martin SELLARS (GBR) finished third.

The 2.4mR Paralympic class was also present at Kiel and completed the most races out of all the classes. After fourteen races Jens Als ANDERSEN of Denmark just clinched the gold by a point from Thierry SCHMITTER of Holland, with the 2000 Paralympic gold medallist Heiko KROEGER of Germany finishing third.
