Less than two weeks remain before the Whirlpool Women's European Match Racing Championship on August 21-24 in Helsinki, Finland where 12 teams will contest the title.
The entry list indicates that this will be an exciting championship, including all of the top five sailors on the ISAF World Match Race Rankings. Top of the list are by current World Champion Malin MILLBOURN of KSSS, Sweden and Marie BJÖRLING (DEN) ranked number one in the world.
Nina BRAESTRUP (DEN), Marie FAURE (FRA) and Lotte MELDGAARD PEDERSEN (DEN) ranked at number three, four and five in the world respectively complete the top five and the latter will definitely be hunting for revenge after her narrow defeat at the Worlds.
Malin KÄLLSTRÖM (SWE), ranked at number nine and Klaartje ZUIDERBAAN (NED) number 12 are also registered and neither of these skippers can be ruled out as tough challengers.
The local talent is represented by Peppi KARLEMO and Mickan ERIKSSON, ranked 23 and 26 respectively, but well versed in the local conditions, and fully trained in the J-80s to be used at the event.
The line up is completed by Christina REFN (DEN), 19 year old Nina RAMM-SCHMIDT (FIN), ranked at number 44 and 91 respectively and a relative newcomer, 22 year old Rita GONCLAVES from Portugal who is yet unranked. Only time will tell as to how these sailors will rise to the challenge…
The Whirlpool Euromatch is organised by ISAF International Race Office Rolf ZACHARIASSEN (FIN), while ISAF International Judge, Race Office and Umpire, Lars NYQVIST (FIN) will run the racing.
News will be relayed daily by press officer Henry ERICSSON and posted daily by webmaster Tobias NIEMI on the event website as indicated below.
