Sopot Match Race 2005
Sopot, Poland

Russia's Andrew ARBUZOV stormed the competition at the ISAF Grade 1 Sopot Match Race in Poland yesterday with five straight wins leaving him with a perfect 9-0 record at the end of the round robin. The other performance of the day came from home sailor Przemek TARNACKI (POL), whose four wins and one loss lifted him to third overall.
ARBUZOV started the day in ominous fashion following up a win over Marek STANCZYK (POL) with the defeat of number seven in the ISAF World Match Race Rankings and then overall leader Ian WILLIAMS (GBR). Wins against TARNACKI, Laurie JURY (NZL) and runner up in Sopot last year Stefan MEISTER (GER) ensued to complete an excellent day for the Open Russian Champion and World number 20.

Following his loss to ARBUZOV, WILLIAMS drops to second overall, after he added one more victory to his points total with a win against Philipp KADELBACH (GER) yesterday. TARNACKI's four wins came against Daniel GLOMB (BRA), Simon MINOPRIO (NZL), MEISTER and crucially in the first flight of the day against World number nine Eugeniy NEUGODNIKOV (RUS), a result which lifts him above the Russian into the top three.

Below the top four there was a tightly fought contest for a top eight spot and a place in today's quarter finals. MEISTER came out best of the rest with a 4-5 record with the Kiwis MINOPRIO and JURY sixth and seventh on 3-6. The final quarter final spot went saw all three remaining competitors tied on 2-7 records, with the countback going in favour KADELBACH.

Today these eight compete in the quarter finals with the semi finals and final set for tomorrow and Sunday.
