PWA - King of the Caribbean

Local Bonaire sailor, Taty FRANS (Gaastra, AHD) and Daida MORENO (Mistral, North) of Spain were yesterday's winners in their respective single elimination's on the second day of action at the PWA, Bonaire Freestyle Finals.
Frans ranked seventh in the world fought through a series of tough heats to face yesterdays double elimination winner Ricardo CAMPELLO (JP, Neil Pryde) of Brazil in the men's final. The women's race for the title heated up after Daida MORENO took revenge over Wednesday's victor Karin JAGGI by defeating her in a heated final.

The wind was marginal in the morning in Lac Bay yesterday as trades dropped down to 10-15 knots making for tough competition conditions. By mid afternoon after the single elimination finals the wind steadily picked up allowing competition to run through until dark, just two heats away from the final.

When Wednesday's winner, Tonky FRANS suffered defeat in the quarter-finals at the hands of Kevin MEVISSEN (JP, Neil Pryde) of Holland; it was up to his brother Taty to carry the family flag into the final. Taty stormed through heats on the top half of the draw against Lars PETERSON (JP, Neil Pryde), Diony GUADAGNINO (Neil Pryde), Colin SIFFERLEN (Starboard) and Kevin MEVISSEN (JP, Neil Pryde). Meanwhile it was business as usual for Ricardo CAMPELLO who charged through heats against Choco FRANS (Gaastra, AHD), Victor FERNANDEZ (Fanatic), Kiri THODE (Starboard) and Douglas DIAZ (North, Fanatic). The final saw an extremely close run battle with both sailors pulling off several incredible moves despite the light winds. The edge went to Taty FRANS who nailed eleven out of his thirteen moves that included a switch stance chacho, whilst Ricardo was slightly less consistent pulling eight out of his twelve maneuvers.

Robby SWIFT (JP, Neil Pryde), ranked equal number one in the world before this event saw his title hopes slip one step further away today after losing in the second round of the men's single to Nicolas AKGAZCIYAN (AHD, Neil Pryde) of France. Swift sailed a rock solid heat but failed to match the more technical moves of the young French sailor. In the double Swift came back through two heats against Juvannie THIELMAN and Konan LANG (Naish) before having to settle for 9th position after losing to Tonky FRANS (Gaastra, AHD) in heat 61.

World number three Kauli SEADI (AHD, Naish) also suffered disappointment this morning also going down in the second round at the hands of freestyle specialist Colin SIFFERLEN of New Caledonia. Seadi only managed to advance through one heat in the double elimination with Diony GUADAGNINO (Neil Pryde) taking him down, leaving the Brazilian having to settle for 13 position.

The youngest competitor in the fleet, Fourteen year old local hot shot Kiri THODE (Starboard) also known as the Bonaire 'Irie Man' sailed brilliantly advancing over Ronald MAYER and Remko DE WEERD (Gaastra, AHD) of Holland in the single, before giving Ricardo CAMPELLO a solid run for his money in the quarter finals. In the double elimination Kiri put up a solid fight up against Diony GUADAGNINO but narrowly failed to advance after a 2-1 decision in Diony's favor.

Darkness was the only factor halting the completion of the double elimination late in the evening with Kevin MEVISSEN (JP, Neil Pryde) and Douglas DIAZ winning through the last heat of the day against Nicolas AKGAZCIYAN (AHD, Neil Pryde) and Tonky FRANS (Gaastra, AHD) respectively.

Mevissen and Akgazciyan will now face each other in the opening heat this morning for a spot against Ricardo Campello to decide who will face Taty FRANS in the men's double elimination final.

The single elimination final placing has firmly consolidated Ricardo CAMPELLO'S title campaign and nothing short of a miracle will stop him now in his bid to become the 2003 PWA overall freestyle champion.

In the women's battle Daida MORENO (Mistral, North) took revenge over Karin JAGGI (JP, Neil Pryde) of Switzerland after winning the women's single elimination final. Daida had won a close fought battle with here sister Iballa in the semi finals to ensure her slot in the final against Jaggi who had won through against Austrian sailor, Tanja EMIG on the other half of the ladder. The race for the women's title is now reaching boiling point here in Bonaire with the second women's double elimination to be decided first thing this morning if conditions allow.
