2.4 Metre World Championship 2005
Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Italy

Nick SCANDONE (USA) sailed a brilliant end to the series as he claimed the 2.4 Metre World Championship title in Marciana Marina, Elba Island, Italy over the weekend. The American continued the form that saw him make an excellent finish at the IFDS Disabled Sailing World Championship at the start of the month to take a ten point series win.
SCANDONE took over the lead when runner up at the IFDS Worlds in Denmark, Heiko KRÖGER (GER) was disqualified in race six. In the winning position with two races left, SCANDONE responded to the pressure, scoring a bullet in race seven and a fourth in race eight to take a comfortable victory.

Sweden's Stellan BERLIN came in second, the first of the able-bodied sailors, whilst Helena LUCAS (GBR) finished as top women to take the bronze medal after narrowly missing the podium at the IFDS Worlds. She tied on points with the sailor who beat her to bronze in Denmark, the Paralympic bronze medallist Thierry SCHMITTER (NED), with her victory in the final race proving the deciding factor between the two.
