Over last weekend, the classic 5.5 metre class held their Italian Open on Lake Maggiore. 23 boats from Italy, Switzerland, Australia and Austria took part in what started as a fresh to frightening regatta.
35 knots over the water for the first race saw many of the fleet decimated in difficult conditions, with only 12 of the fleet surviving to finish race one. Bruno MARAZZI (SUI), stamped his authority on the game early on by winning the windy first race, and went on to be consistently in the top few, eventually winning with a lowest finishing position of fourth.
The wind calmed down for the remainder of the regatta, allowing a total of four races to be completed over the three days of racing. Newcomer Armando DALDINI (SUI), with local Italian skipper Eusebio FABRIZIO (ITA), finished a credible second in the competitive fleet.
The top six finishers were all either modern or evolutionary 5.5 metre's, with the fist classic finisher being Marco di NATALE (ITA) in Twins X.
